Self discipline is not a trait, it’s a skill and you need it to succeed at almost anything in life. The ability to do what you need to do at a given moment is critical to accomplishing your goals in nearly any endeavor. This means you cannot really “be” self disciplined, but that you can “utilize” self discipline to get things done. Because self discipline is a skill, no matter how skilled you are, there is always room for improvement. Improved self discipline is a goal that requires constant practice, and the more you practice it, the more skilled you will become.
Tips for Improving Self Discipline:
• Make a mental inventory of your reasons for wanting to discipline your self.
• Be realistic and allow yourself to admit mistakes but don’t use them as an excuse to give up.
• Practice makes perfect and you can teach yourself that self discipline is within your reach with practice.
• Know and understand the rules of any action you undertake to limit making ignorant mistakes.
• Try to eliminate bad habits that can hinder your attempts at discipline or put a negative attitude on your situation.
• Set goals that will provide you with the drive and motivation needed to follow through with tasks and overcome obstacles.
• Try to do what you say you will do and always try to finish what you start.
• Leave the negativity behind and don’t let others around you affect your discipline and drive to accomplish a task.
• Visualize that you have already accomplished your goals before you start.
• Make a plan of action and stick to it as you undertake a task.
• Separate your fear of failure from yourself. If a project fails, do not consider yourself a failure. You can always try again.
• Start a task with the attitude that you are going to do your best no matter what happens.
• Focus your thoughts and attitude on completing the task and get it done as quickly as possible.
